I knew it would happen sooner or later. My dealer in Biloxi about blew a cork when finally took the bike in for its 600 mile service, at about 1100 miles. The shifter on baby bike had bent, and he thought his mechanic did it. Nope, size 13 steel toed boots and an agressive (overly?) operator.
Several parts on mine have needed to be reshaped over the past 2+ years, they keep warping on me. :-(
If your new shifter rod does the same thing, here is how to fix it. Rethread (drill out first if needed) the fittings on the rod ends, using an SAE tap. Go to the local bolt shop and have them cut a piece of grade * all thread or a very long bolt to the size you need. Install in place of defective original. End of problem. The heat treating of a grade * fastener is stronger than that used on the steering head, which is under a considerable amount more stree than the shifter linkage.
